Deciding which colors for your home exterior can be a difficult and stressful process. You want your color scheme to be unique, but you don’t want it to stand out from the natural look of the neighborhood. Finding the right mixture of colors that you and your family will be satisfied with is important because it will last for a long time, and you don’t want to pay to have anything replaced or repainted.

To give you some help on where to begin here are a few steps that will help narrow down your selection.

1.) Start by identifying the colors that you like. It’s important to start here because it’s time consuming to go through all of the possible colors available and also it’s your opinion that matters the most for your home. During this step don’t worry so much as to the shading of the colors, just get a feel for what base colors you would like to include.

2.) Look at Your Neighborhood and Permanent Exterior. The next thing to understand is the overall style of your surrounding area. Is the style more contemporary or historic? Find the colors you chose that will fit in well with the style, yet still offer opportunities to be unique. Also observe the permanent exterior surrounding your home, such as any landscaping or natural stone/brick components. Generally red brick parts of your home will offer more flexibility in terms of color selection; gray brick parts of the home will be best matched with a similar neutral color.

3.) Determine the Color Shade – There are several things to consider when selecting the right shading. Darker shades may appear smaller as compared to lighter shades, and also darker shades collect more heat and can fade faster. Using a contrast between dark and light parts of your exterior can be great to make certain areas of your house stand out and appear larger. For a home with a large entryway you may want to consider contrasting the door, or other parts of the entryway, from the rest of the home exterior. This will draw more attention to it.

Here is a list of roof and siding color/shading combinations that tend to work well together, but there are still many combinations that will work.

House Color – Roof Color

Gray/Blue Dark – Gray/Black

Tan – Black/Gray/Dark Brown

White – Dark Color

Red/Green/Yellow – Black/Gray

4.) Finishing Touches. Once all of the main components are in place, it’s time to consider any finishing touches to apply to the home. The focus now is on the trim and outer edges of the exterior. Using a different color/shade for the outside edges can accentuate the architectural layout of your home. This can look great for homes that really want to stand out while still fitting into the surrounding area.

The intent of home exterior design is two-fold. On the level of aesthetics, home exterior design provides an external and sophisticated compliment to the architecture of a house. By integrating Nature and man-made structures, the home interior designer creates a framework into the usefulness of the home interior can be expanded into the world beyond without compromising the beauty of the landscape. This is very important, because the functional elements of the outcome must blend effectively with indigenous vegetation, manicured lawns, outdoor decorations, and fountains in order to create an environment that is suitable and comfortable for quality outdoor family time and home entertainment functions. Only a few companies in the world of landscaping, such as Houston?s Exterior Worlds, provide this sophisticated blend of natural harmony and human creature comforts for the discriminating homeowner who is seeking a living experience beyond the norm.

Home exterior elements vary widely based on several important factors. The lifestyle of the homeowner is first among these. At the end of the day, what the resident plans to do outdoors provides our team with a great deal of information on what we can build for them. Careful analysis of the house and surrounding landscapes also plays a key role in helping us shape the specifics of a home exterior design plan. Landscaping itself forms the foundation of this plan, and acts as a framework where structures and activity centers can be blended with pockets of indigenous vegetation, gardens and manicured lawns, and large, stately trees that rise prominently in various locations within the yard.

Some of our most popular home exterior designs include, but are not limited, to the following elements

Screened-in rooms

These are ideal for parties, family gatherings, and even important, formal events. They can be equipped with anything from fine furnishings to extend a living room outdoors, or be outfitted with an entertainment system and an outdoor bar as an open entertainment area that provides convenient exposure from insects and other pests during outdoor events.

Outdoor kitchens with garden elements included

People that enjoy grilling for large groups love these open-air structures that can include everything from smokers to refrigerators. There are a number of ways that they can be designed, as well. Some can be built out of hedges, while others can be simple gravel areas open to the elements.

Pools and Patios

Many people fail to realize that pools and patios are actually exterior design elements just as much as they are home entertainment areas. Many also realize after the fact that it is much easier to have a pool installed or a patio built as part of a larger, more comprehensive design plan than it is to attempt working directly with a pool specialist or carpenter. These professionals are more used to working with general landscape contractors like Exterior Worlds and can much better serve the resident when a well-developed schematic is shown to them by an expert who speaks their language.

Arbors, Gardens, and Shade Structures

Much can be done with the simplicity of a group of trees or an ornamental garden with a fountain. Outdoor tables and benches can be placed around these areas to create gathering spaces for mingling guests. Landscape path lighting can be installed that creates walkways for people to takes short walks along winding trails that increase an illusion that the property is much bigger than it really is.

Indeed, almost all elements of a home exterior design will create a feeling of freedom and expansiveness by strategically positioning a variety of structures and conveniences in convenient locations around the property. When done correctly, it can make a property to look as large as 2 ? to 3 times its normal size?much the way adding furniture to a room makes it look larger. The amazing range of options that this science offers to the homeowner makes it one of the most customizable design disciplines practiced. With so many natural and structural elements to work with, virtually anything can be created within the boundaries of safety, comfort, and proportional harmony that will provide lifestyle and entertainment to today?s eclectic homeowner.

When building moving boxes most people place one small piece of tape on the bottom of the box and call it good. What most people don’t know is that moving boxes are not as durable as you think they are, they are strong at first but once they are used for a while they will become weak. What this means to you is that you need to construct durable moving boxes a different way.

Tips On Constructing Boxes

Use More Tape – One of the things that you can do to construct a durable moving box is to use a lot more tape. Like I said before, most people place one strip of tape down the middle of the box but what you should consider doing is to tape the flaps down first and then run a long piece of box tape down the middle of the box. The reason you do this is so that there is more support and all the weight is not help up by one single piece of tape.

Tape Weak Points – Did you know that the weakest point on a box is not the bottom where the box actually breaks through? The weakest point on a box is in the corners. The reason this is the weakest point is because that is where most people grab moving boxes from. What you should do is tape the corners so that whoever is moving the box will have more support and so they won’t just crush the corner when holding it. I know this sounds a little off but this is how you can extend the life of your moving boxes and ensure they stay strong during the move.

As you can see, it is very important to have boxes and tape to move house items from one house to the next. Trust me, you are better off using more tape than normal than to risk the box opening up or breaking when you don’t want it to.

Hardscaping has become a popular trend in recent years for folks looking to beautify the outside of their home. While landscape design deals with things like your trees, lawn and garden, hardscape design covers all the non-living stuff like your rocks, concrete, pathways, etc.

Homeowners who undertake a hardscape design project will usually end up with an exterior they will greatly enjoy, as well as enhance the value of their home. There are a few areas to focus on to make the hardscaping a success.

First, let’s take a look at the sculptures and planters. It is important here to look for the proper balance. Flower plants in your yard and garden are great, but you need to be careful not to overdo it. If you have too many of these things, it will start to take over your yard, and it will be difficult to highlight any of the other features. See to it that you strike the right balance of planters with flowers, and well as sculptures, for the size and shape of your yard.

Retaining walls are another hardscaping element that can do wonders for your yard. The main purpose of an exterior retaining wall is to hold back the soil from erosion and keep the landscaped areas in place. Retaining walls can also be useful as a border to divide one are of the yard from another. When you have areas of your yard that are unattractive, retaining walls can be strategically placed to cover them up so visitors don’t see them and they don’t become a hindrance when it comes time to sell your home.

Pavers or bricks are another element of hardscaping that can greatly enhance the look and attractiveness of the home’s exterior. Many homeowners these days build walkways or even patios out of bricks or pavers. There are several potential advantages to using these materials instead of traditional concrete. First, bricks and pavers come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes. For whatever style you are trying to achieve, there is usually a design available that will make a perfect match for your home.

Another reason using brick or paver is popular is that many homeowners can install it themselves without the need for a professional. Of course, you need to know what you’re doing and have a general idea of how you want the finished product to look. But if you have all that, then hardscaping a walkway or even a patio without the help of a professional can be accomplished.

Overall, hardscape design is an increasingly popular way to create the home exterior of your dreams. It goes hand in hand with traditional landscaping of the plants, trees, garden, etc. create a design that will be aesthetically pleasing and significantly increase the value of your home.

Modern house plans offer a great alternative to the more traditional styles. Even if you don’t want to go all the way with an ultra-modern house plan, there are many modern-inspired house plans that are not too extreme in their appearance.

Modern house plans include a range of styles, ranging from the stereotypical “concrete, steel, and glass” look to subtle or exaggerated variations of historically older house plan styles.

Historians of architecture and house plan sellers often use somewhat different definitions of styles, especially in the more fragmented modern house plans category. One synonym that’s often used for modern house plans is “contemporary house plans.” While technically a subcategory of modern house plans, contemporary house plans seem to describe best what most people would intuitively describe as “modern”.

Technically, the following styles are all modern styles:

    Craftsman
Bungalow
French Eclectic
Art Deco/Art Moderne
A-Frame
Neo-Eclectic
Neo-Classical
Neo-Victorian
Neo-mediterranean
Neo-Colonial
Neo-”Anything”
Contemporary
Postmodern

Finding modern house plans can be a bit challenging because of the loose definition of the term, but after a few initial searches you should get a feel for which sites have better offerings than others. Keep in mind that a site with the largest number of plans is not necessarily the best resource.

There are specialist designers focusing on modern plans, who may offer you more interesting and individual designs and smarter service. It just requires a bit more digging to reach the smaller studios. That said, looking through a large site’s collection of house plans can be a quick and efficient way to refine your ideas for what you seek in a modern plan.

Personally, I’m a big fan of modern house plans, because they tend to have larger windows and open floor plans, which provide a flexible and spacious living experience. Even if your house doesn’t look like a “modern” house from the outside, the interior layout of modern house plans makes it worthwhile to take a look at them.
